SAAS VENDORS – ARE YOU DOING THE MATHS?

Getting to market is one thing

But to stay in it you need to maximise your customer lifetime value

And it’s all about doing the MATHS

MAINTAIN

As computing pioneer Maurice Wilkes said, “We found…it wasn’t as easy to get programs right as we had thought”

You’re going to have bugs and they need to be fixed

So be transparent

Admit your faults and get them sorted

AUGMENT

Each release is just a line in the sand

There will always be more to add to keep wowing the punters

TRAIN

Tutorials, training courses, mentoring and more

Teach your customers how to maximise the value of their purchase

What’s the point of creating a feature if hardly anyone uses it?

HELP

I once wrote over 4,000 individual files for a help system

It’s a dull, boring and truly tedious job

It’s also ESSENTIAL if your users are going to be able to help themselves

SUPPORT

Don’t hide from your customers

Give them the support they need to solve their problems quickly and efficiently

Forums, online chat, email, phone staff…whatever

Use as many channels as you can to help them

All your customers want is for your software to solve their problems

Making the platform is the hard bit

It would be a shame to muck it up post sale

GIVE YOUR CUSTOMERS THE ★★★★★ TREATMENT

#SAAS vendors make subscribing to their platform easy

But too many make it EASY TO LEAVE!

A monthly churn rate of ~2% means they’re replacing 1 in 4 customers every year

And replacing them is as much as 25X the cost of keeping them

Think how much they could save on marketing!

So much more to spend on development of the platform, right?!

NOPE!

More to spend on building their ECOSYSTEM

Because that’s what they’re selling

Once they’ve built their platform, they’ve addressed most of their customers’ immediate needs

Yes, they need to keep evolving, adding new features and updating the aesthetic

BUT…

IF WE’RE LOOKING AT THE TECHNOLOGY WE’RE MISSING THE POINT

New features might attract a few new customers

They might convince some not to leave

But it’s software as a #SERVICE

They need to do BOTH well

Their platform may be brilliant

But without good help, education and high quality post-sale support, it may remain a mystery to their customers

And IF THEY CAN’T PLAY, THEY WON’T STAY

#SAAS should be like top hotel

Great rooms, fantastic food, excellent activities and superior service

Get them all right and guests will pay a premium for the experience

And they may just come back year after year

DATA IS THE NEW GOLD

Your business is dependent on its electronic data

And if it isn’t yet, it will be soon

And that means your organisation is just one failed backup strategy away from oblivion

A tad dramatic?

Probably, but it’s also true!

And given the stories I hear, it’s a point worth making

Backup tapes stored in the boss’ desk drawer for safety

Or a manufacturer running for a whole year with an automated back up that failed every night

And no one checked!

And a large percentage of businesses that never test their backups because, well, you know, she’ll be right

This is the ‘Schrödinger’s Backup’ approach

It says, ‘The condition of any backup is unknown until a restore is attempted’

Now what was that about assumption being the mother of all something or other?

Anyway, whether the world is out to get you or not, you really need to…

DO YOUR BACKUPS

FOLLOW THE 3-2-1 RULE

CHECK THEY WORKED

ENSURE YOU CAN RESTORE FROM THEM

Do these properly, and you’ll have a fighting chance of bouncing back should the worst come to the worst

Get it wrong and you might be fighting for survival

You can read more about backups in my latest article for SmallVille

There’s a link in the comments

Now, be honest, are your getting you backups right?

AI NEEDS YOUR HELP

Yes, #AI will help us and it will shift the job market

But it won’t turn in to HAL 3000, and we’ll be spared the flailing arms of Robot from Lost in Space

And C-3PO and R2-D2 will remain fictitious…at least for now

As Dr Mariarosaria Taddeo from the Oxford Internet Institute said, “…there is not a shred of proper research that supports the idea that AI can become sentient”

So, it looks very clever, but human clever it ain’t

#AI today is just maths and text parsing

It’s the evolution of existing coding techniques

So this means that AI has significant limitations and still needs a lot of help

So we’ll need to evolve alongside it if we’re going to maximise its value

There will be a skills shortage in the short term

Practitioners will be in demand and expensive

So you’ll need to upskill the team to help fill the knowledge gap

But what if you train them and they leave?

What if you don’t and they stay?

Consider then which you’d rather have

A good tool in amateur hands?

An average tool in skilled hands?

Or no tool at all?

I’d take the skilled hands every time, and when it comes to IT, so should you

And given the rate of technological change, the sooner you start, the better

Because the opportunity is NOW

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?

It’s amazing what we miss when our focus is elsewhere

Last week I posted a video

The post was titled ‘BABY IN A SAUCEPAN’

The text even said to look out for them

They were on the screen for nearly 3 seconds

And yet I had people tell me they didn’t see either

They were focussed on me, reading the captions or whatever

This same scenario plays out in many places

It’s what makes being a #CEO or #CFO so hard

Lots of competing priorities that grab attention

So it’s easy to miss something in the background

Especially if it’s something you don’t ‘get’

IT is a bit like that

It sits in the background, quietly doing its thing

In the mid-tier, many business leaders give it a quick glance now and then

But no one really looks at it

What would you see if you looked at yours?

What would your team see?

What would your customers, partners and suppliers see?

WHAT WOULD I SEE?

I’d see opportunities

I’d see where you could improve your efficiency, morale and engagement

I’d see where you could create a better environment and deliver a superior profit per person

And who wouldn’t want all of those?

Especially if they paid for themselves

It’s amazing what can be hidden in plain sight

All you have to do is start looking

PLAIN ENGLISH PLEASE

Right, it’s #RANT time!

What a DUMB industry!

It’s no wonder business leaders find IT so hard

It’s an industry that speaks in tongues

It uses terms like “the cloud” and “digital transformation”

WELL WHOOP DO FFFFFFF DO!

I wouldn’t mind, but the definitions are constantly changing

Wikipedia’s seem to evolve almost daily

One sounds like some ephemeral fantasy land

And the other sounds like we’re living in The Matrix

It’s enough to scare the cr*p out of any even half sane #CEO

Not only that, they sound vague, intrusive and complex

And to cap it all, it’s all about how wonderful the tech is

Super silicon thingies that do a billion things before you even press the enter key

That said, I saw an RPF with phrases like “decoupled platforms” and “flexible ecosystem development”, so I suppose it could be worse

There were so many buzzwords in it I shouted “HOUSE!” and won a cheap weekend in Porpoise Spit

If you want to use some kind of Orwellian Newspeak, be my guest

But I’m far more interested in using modern tools to

Solve problems

Improve efficiency and morale

Deliver a better service

And generate a BIGGER PROFIT PER PERSON

If you’d prefer your IT in plain English too, give me a call

We can commiserate together

IGNORANCE IS NO DEFENCE

CEO Modernisation IT Investment

New CEOs typically inherit all manner of **** systems

A legacy their forebear didn’t sort out before moving on

I mentioned this to a newly minted #CEO yesterday and he said what’s inherited isn’t the problem

It’s simply that many don’t understand the role IT will play in the future of business

And that’s why systems ending up like that in the first place

BRAVO!

I’m all for calling a spade a spade and getting to the root of the problem

He then said that changing leader may well be a case of too little too late

BRAVISSIMO!

I wrote recently about legacy systems, and how the #modernisation can has been kicked down the road

I said, “Yes, the lights are on, but for how much longer?”

And he finished by saying the size of the organisation “is scarily irrelevant”

HOLY MOLY, I THINK WE’RE SHARING A BRAIN!

I wrote a book that says much the same

I love CEOs that get IT!

EVERY BUSINESS SHOULD HAVE ONE!

We are in an unparalleled tech revolution

The future arrived yesterday and tomorrow may already be a distant memory

This is no time for conservatism

If you want to take part, investing in IT is the only way

And if you need help, just ask

It’s why people like me exist

Because ignorance is never a good defence

A GLOWING RECOMMENDATION

I can you tell ad nauseam that I’m very good at what I do, and I am

But nothing beats an endorsement from a customer

So many thanks to the exceptional @Michael Thirgood, CEO of #FreightForwarder BCR Australia Pty Ltd

“With BCR looking to become a recognized digital leader in its market, we engaged Stewart to provide a strategic view and clarity around how we could best leverage the technology revolution. His extensive #innovation experience and no-nonsense, business-driven approach is delivered in non-technical language and plain English and has given us a solid foundation on which to build our digital future. We look forward to continuing our mutually beneficial relationship”

And BCR will do well because the leadership has the right mindset

They’re leading the way, investing in technology and #innovation

To do this, they’re putting the needs of their team, customers and more at the centre of their technology decisions

When I work with a business, I don’t want to cajole them and tell them what to do

I want them to learn, to grow, and to choose their path

So it’s a joy to work with one that has already taken its first tentative steps in the right direction

I’m very much looking forward to their future success

HIBERNATE OR INNOVATE?

Something very rare and super precious could be around the corner

A #recession during a technology boom

A golden opportunity too good to miss!

Tough trading times will kill off or weaken the competition

Some will diversify, spreading their forces too thin

Others will cut prices and race to the bottom

But progressives will focus their efforts

They’ll stick to core competencies

They’ll maximise the value of their customers and steal others from their opposition

And they’ll keep marketing

They’ll have an eye on the future because they know the recession will end

When it does, it will be time to feast

And they’ll be able to gorge

Because while the conservatives were hunkering down for winter, they were innovating

They were investing in technology to

Improve efficiency

Build a better team

Connect with customers

Deliver exemplary service

And stand out in the market

Profits might have been affected in the short term

But better times will be ahead, and business will blossom once more

Those who chose to hibernate will be playing catchup

And they’ll be a long, long way behind

I don’t know much about hibernation

But I do about #innovation and improving profit per person

So why not ask how I can help you today?

FACE TO SCREEN IS THE NEW FACE TO FACE

I grew up rural Warwickshire in the 70s and 80s

Just outside Stratford Upon Avon, the home of Shakespeare

Being a bright young man, I was selected for King Edward VIth grammar school for boys

It was the school that Shakespeare attended 450 years ago

And the school’s Guild Chapel dates back far even farther to being built in the 13th century

Looking back it was an idyllic upbringing

We walked miles to the river and back for a day’s fishing, went on long bike rides and took the dog out for hours

And of course, the village shop keepers knew just about everyone by name and personal #service was the norm

But times have changed

I now live in a city and like many I use electronic media to communicate with businesses

But this doesn’t mean I want anything less by way of service

Yet most business leaders don’t understand this

73% think that face to face is what their customers want

But in reality, only 33% do

And 50% of customers think the buying online is important compared to 25% of businesses

So like it or not, the crowd has spoken and face to screen is the new normal

You can read more on this in my column over at SmallVille

Are you giving your customers what they want?

What’s your minimum viable product?

What’s your timeline?

Are you too late to market?

B2B, OR IS IT REALLY P2P?

My newest and most exciting client is a domestic and international FreightForwarding and 3PL company

A mid-tier player in a market worth $187B by 2021

They’ve been around for decades, treating Aussie businesses like part of the family

But they’re battling the well resourced BIG players

So they’re upping their game

And their size and agility give them an edge

They’re not constrained by global, corporate policy

They don’t have to wait for decisions in meetings in far off lands

So they can be quick to market

But their biggest asset is an #innovation mindset

They’re embracing technology to help them stand out

The CEO has a vision for the future

They’ll still be mid-tier and still B2B

But they’ll offer the sort of personal, tailored service that only an SME can

They’re going to #innovate, creating their own intellectual property

They’ll build tools to inform and connect their people, their team, customers, prospects, partners, suppliers and more

Why are they’re doing this?

Because when we look under the covers, B2B is really customer and vendor, partner and partner, CEO and CEO

And it’s why human-centricity MUST be at the very core of your technology choices

Because B2B is really just person to person

ALL MUSHROOMS ARE EDIBLE, BUT SOME ONLY ONCE

We eat just a few varieties because we know them to be safe

They’re nice, but if I’m honest they’re a bit…MEH!

But we could forage in the bush

We could try A LITTLE of one that we find

It might not taste nice

We might be ill, but we’ll survive and be wiser for the experience

But we might find one that’s MUCH TASTIER

It could become that little something we add to a dish that no one else has

The secret ingredient that wows our friends

We can do the same with our tech

This is how R&D works

We look for a problem and propose a possible solution

We don’t know ahead of time that it will work

So we try give it a try

It might fail

We might lose a few $$$, but it won’t kill us

But it might make our dish that bit better

Yet many mid-tier CEOs and CFOs err on the side of caution, afraid to take a risk

They stick with the varieties everyone else uses

They’re cheap and known to be a safe bet

But the result is an offering that’s just like everyone else

They’re nice, but if I’m honest they’re a bit…MEH!

Wouldn’t you prefer to offer something so much more delicious than your competition?

TECHNOLOGY WILL MAKE YOUR PEOPLE MORE PROFITABLE

So why is Australia such a $^%#ing backwater when it comes to tech use?

Tools have been improving man’s lot for millennia

But here in The Lucky Country, we rely more and more on digging big holes and growing stuff

BUT…

In Harvard’s Atlas of Economic Diversity, we’re 93rd in the world

CSIRO’s Data61 CEO Adrian Turner says we spend 1.9% of #GDP on R&D compared to others at 3.6%

Our government says coal and the industries of yesteryear are still the way forward

Well I call #BS!

And I’d happily tell Scott Morrison to his face

A conservative approach served us well during the last #GFC

But it has #FAILED badly since

Years of political turmoil, a pathetic, ideological stance and government inaction has driven Australia to the brink

There is a technological revolution going on around us and we are literally playing in the dirt

But you can choose to stop this

You can focus on improving your technology use

You can make your team more efficient, improve morale and reduce operating costs

You can better connect with your prospects, improve customer lifetime value and lower you marketing spend

You can improve your profit person

But it’s down to you

Call me today to start the 2019 ball rolling

WANT TO BE DIFFERENT? – TARGET THE 10%

Your core systems and solutions represent about 90% of tech that you need, and they’re just like those of your competition

So they offer little by way of competitive advantage

Better then to focus your time, energy and money on the remaining 10% that you don’t have

The tools, tweaks and tailoring that you can leverage that will help your efficiency and customer engagement

Why?

Because incremental change delivers value far bigger than the sum of its parts

FILL THE KNOWLEDGE GAP AND IMPROVE YOUR PROFIT PER PERSON

Technology is evolving quicker than we are

This is a double edged sword for business

A fantastic array of opportunities but often a team ill equipped to realise its value

This is the KNOWLEDGE GAP

And for many businesses, it’s getting BIGGER

But find a way to fill the gap and you have the advantage

You can leverage modern technology

Efficiency will increase, driving down wage costs

Morale will improve so you spend less on recruitment and interruption

Client engagement will be higher, bolstering your brand value

Customer lifetime value will go up and marketing costs down

And you’ll have a better profit per person

All you need do then is RINSE and REPEAT

You’ll have a culture of innovation and incremental change

An environment where you and your team work smarter, not harder

A beautiful, virtuous circle

BUT!

ONLY if you take the lead and set the agenda

ONLY if you engage with the process and invest in your technology

ONLY if you take the time to understand the value inherent in the KNOWLEDGE GAP

The best time to get going was YESTERDAY

And TOMORROW will never come

So make a start TODAY

All you have to do is ASK ME for a copy of my bestselling book ‘Doing IT for Money’

A SLOW, MISERABLE DECLINE? – IT’S UP TO YOU!

According to CSIRO, that’s pretty much where we are

In it’s ‘Australian National Outlook 2060’ report it sees 2 possible futures

One is a modern successful Australia that’s embraced technology and social change

The other is future where Australia is a shadow of it’s former self

A stagnant, regressive nation clinging grimly to it’s past of growing things and digging big holes

If we carry on as we are today, the latter is our future

The report identifies 5 key shifts for industry, urban, energy, land and culture

As an innovator, it’s industry that interests me

CSIRO says, “Industry shift – Boost productivity in established industries, prepare workforce for jobs of the future, and invest in innovative industries”

If you’re a business leader, you can start to address the first two immediately

And it won’t need wholesale change

Just a tweak here or there and a little strategic investment

There is a raft of new technology available that can streamline your activities, and upskilling the team has never been a bad investment

But this all requires a mindset shift first

It needs leaders at all levels to embrace a modern forward thinking Australia

Without it, our destiny will be to live in the past

WHAT PROBLEM AND WHICH ANSWER?

In my last post, I told of how my much loved Subaru Forester had an oil leak and an all but dead power steering pump too

My amateur diagnosis based on the racket it was making

The NRMA guy agreed

It went to Sid’s garage on Thursday

He rang on Friday to tell me the steering rack was Kaput

That, the pump and labour would be $1500 or more

Sid rang 30 minutes later

They’d found a loose nut on a high pressure hose when removing the rack

Could that be the real culprit?

They tightened it up and cleared the air from the steering pump

No more oil leak and a silent pump

A car driving like new again for $150

A quicker and cheaper solution because Sid found the REAL PROBLEM and then the RIGHT ANSWER

NOT the FIRST perceived problem and the FIRST answer

This is an important metaphor for IT decision making

It’s all too easy to think that new technology is the answer

But employ a specialist to investigate, you get a new perspective

You may find the problem isn’t what you thought it was

You may find the answer is very different

So often it’s not the technology that’s failed

It’s how it’s used and how people interact with it

So before you spend big, make sure you’re solving the REAL PROBLEM with the RIGHT ANSWER

A STITCH IN TIME SAVES…

My much loved Subaru Forester has an oil leak

I know because it drips on the exhaust, creating a plume of white smoke

I delayed getting it fixed until I was ready for the car to be off the road

I’d been topping up the oil, but it seems the fault caused the power steering fluid to leak too

I hadn’t noticed that

The power steering pump died yesterday

I was going to make a video yesterday, but instead I spent it dealing with the car

If only I’d fixed the leak

If only I’d noticed the drop in fluid

If only…

You know you have faults with your IT

You know it could serve your business better

You know you should bite the bullet and sort it out

But it’s end of financial year soon

It can wait until the new one

Or until you’re ready, whenever that might be

It can wait until you’re forced to fix it

An expert would have known that I risked greater damage, but I never asked one

An expert will be able to tell you about the knock on effects of your issues

My stitch in time would have saved me a few hundred dollars

Your stitch in time will save you hundreds of thousands in wages, recruitment, interruption costs, marketing, lost sales and more

Perhaps you should talk to an expert

Perhaps we should have a chat today

HEY! WE SHOULD CREATE AN APP TO…

NO! No you shouldn’t!

I’m here to save you money, so trust me on this one

20+ years at the sharp end of commercial software R&D teaches you a thing or two

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for developing software

But you need to do it for the right reasons

And sadly few do

All too often, the desire to make an app comes from little more than a thought bubble

And guess what, someone probably had it before

And as there are millions of apps on Google Play and the Apple store, it probably already exists

A few days of research to find the right one it is far cheaper than months of development

But, if you have an issue unique to your business and a user base you can control, you may have a valid business case

One I was involved in empowered 3000+ contractors and saved hundreds of calls to a call centre

But even that wasn’t actually an app

It was a website

And it’s an IMPORTANT distinction

Why?

Because websites work everywhere

Android, Apple, Mac, Windows, mobile, tablet and even a TV

A far more flexible solution

So, if you’re thinking of an app, is it the first answer or the right one?

THE RIGHT JOB FOR THE TOOL?

Have you ever taken a child to a toy shop as a surprise?

It’s delightful

Their eyes light up when they see the latest super-duper something or other

They’re suddenly full of ideas about the games they could play if only they had it

These weren’t the games they wanted to play before arriving, but now they’ve seen the toy, these are the ONLY games they want to play

If they get this new toy, like Woody in Toy Story when Buzz first arrives, the other toys will be relegated to second place

Grown ups aren’t much better you know

We hear about new toys like “AI”, whatever that is, machine learning, 5G and the Internet of Things

And we want to play

But unlike children, we can’t simply relegate other toys to second place and forget about them

We have businesses to run and problems to solve, not just games to play

New toys may be the right answer

They may not

Only a grown up approach will determine that before you spend your heard earned cash

But you can only spend it once

If you buy the tool before making a proper assessment, you’ll be looking for the right job for the tool, regardless of whether that’s what you wanted to do

But, take the time to define your problems first and you can buy the right tool for the job

THE TRUTH ABOUT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

A Dystopian future full of Schwarzenegger and a multidimensional fight for human survival isn’t coming anytime soon

In fact, software with “human intelligence” is a long way off

Why?

Because we don’t even know how we learn

Computers might be able to beat our best umans at chess, but there are only 32 pieces and 64 squares

That’s a tiny set of variables for a computer to evaluate

But with 5G and IoT sensors, we’ll soon have access to almost limitless amounts of data

Data based on temperature, pressure, vibration, humidity, location, image and doubtless many more

Data that’s collected and processed in real time

Just like the autopilots that we’ve had on planes for many years but with way more sensors

“AI” today and tomorrow is ALL ABOUT THE DATA

After that, it’s just some very good maths

It’s a statistical analysis to determine an action of best fit

That’s not intelligent

It’s programmed

A human told it what to do

So keep calm and carry on

“AI” is just another tool for business to use

Your job then is to find the problems you need address

Look at your needs, wants and dreams and find the tool that will solve them for you

But don’t focus on the technology

If you do that, you miss the point
